POY 2023: From Transformation to Impact: EdD Programmatic Successes

Transform in Latin (tranformare) means to “change in shape, metamorphose.” The verb is a combination of “trans” which means across or to go beyond and “form” which means to shape, fashion, build (https://www.etymonline.com). Over the last 15 years of CPED, members have reshaped and refashioned the EdD to go beyond traditional doctoral preparation toward a professional practice doctorate. Members have also sought to prepare leaders who can transform their field of practice just as a PhD transforms their discipline (Council of Graduate Schools, 2006).

CPED 2022 Convening Call

2023 Program of the Year Award Nomination Call

The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) is pleased to invite submissions for the 2023 Program of the Year (POY) Award. This award is given to one or more outstanding CPED member institutions whose programming demonstrates excellence, innovation, impact, and alignment with the CPED Framework to promote continuous improvement within varied local contexts. We seek programmatic innovations that are noteworthy for you, that have been impactful for your institution and your students – and that you feel would benefit other CPED member institutions.

Building upon the theme of the 2022 Convening, the POY 2023 award will center around transformation, ways in which an institution has changed in shape, and gone beyond a former “form” to refashion EdD doctoral preparation. Our goal is to extend the learning that takes place at the convening into 2023 as award applicants consider how their institutions have transformed the EdD in ways that further equity-minded practice and, specifically, have worked well for them and the communities they serve. Following the original intent of CPED to develop “proofing sites” (Imig et al., 2009), this award acknowledges a CPED-influenced program that is exemplary in how future “stewards of practice” are prepared to foster a more just and equitable world, be that in their local communities or across the globe. The winner will be announced at the CPED Fall Convening.

The Program of the Year Award is guided by a committee representing member institutions. Each year this committee determines a focal point for the award, as well as quality indicators that will guide its selection process. The quality indicators are described in a rubric that includes components for the preliminary and final applications.

POY 2023 launches a new focus of the award, drawing on and extending the inspiration and learning that begins at the convening. This year’s convening theme of transformation drew more exchange applications than ever before; each of the presenting programs are well positioned to craft their exchange initiative into a POY 2023 application.

Programs of the Year are not necessarily “best” programs. Rather, we seek applicants who have developed transformative initiatives that have been impactful for their community. POY award winners serve as models for learning and as beacons for member institutions. Award recipients and documentation of their journeys become part of CPED’s institutional knowledge base. There are a variety of ways in which award recipients can contribute to this knowledge base: presentations, articles, and supporting future year POY awards through participation on the POY Committee. Details on the submission and evaluation process are below.

The application process has two phases. Phase one consists of an initial application that explains how the program transformation meets institutional and CPED alignment as a condition for an invitation to submit a full application. Those who meet this threshold will be invited to continue to phase two and submit a full application, focused only on the transformation you wish to highlight and the impact that transformation has had on equity and social justice. A full timeline for POY 2023 is as follows:

  • February 6th: Initial applications due
  • March 6th: Invitations for final applications issued
  • June 5th:  Final applications due
  • August 1st: Award Decision
  • October 2023: Award Presentation
    • Presentation Video for Award Ceremony
    • Exchange Session

Interested but want to know more? Two separate information sessions on the application process will be held on

Thursday, November 10th (Passcode: 978571), and Wednesday, December 7th (Passcode: 916131), both at 1 PM ET.
