Happy 15th Birthday to CPED!

On February 23, 2007, at the AACTE annual meeting in New York, a group of 25 schools of education deans met with Dr. David Imig, professor of practice (Maryland) and Carnegie Foundation Senior Fellow, and Dr. Lee Shulman, President Emeritus of the Carnegie Foundation to set out plans of action for a new initiative called The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED).

The goal of CPED was to Design, Develop, Pilot and Evaluate a New Professional Practice Doctorate in Education. The rationale was that the current system of schools of education was “challenged” by diminished satisfaction with either the PhD or EdD, namely the weak research and poor preparation offered in both.

I joined this effort at the beginning as the CPED graduate assistant working alongside Drs. Imig and Shulman in fleshing out rich ideas and challenging our members to think deeply about what professional practice preparation meant and how it differed from research degrees.

Over the past 15 years, CPED went from a small research consortium to becoming a 501C3 nonprofit organization with a Board of Directors and over 125 schools of education in three countries (US, Canada, and Ireland) that includes over 3,000 faculty, staff, and deans working within and across institutions to build strong EdD programs that honor local context and build upon the CPED Framework.

I, too, grew with the organization advancing from graduate assistant to program coordinator to Executive Director. It has been a pleasure to guide this effort over the past 15 years and to see our members and EdD programs around the globe shift towards making research and inquiry more relevant for practitioners.

As we enter 2022 with our Strategic Planning efforts, I invite you to join us in celebrating the profound accomplishments of our CPED members and in offering best wishes to the future success of CPED!

- Dr. Jill A. Perry, Executive Director
