Enhancing Student and Faculty Engagement with CPED

This session will explore strategies to enhance both student and faculty engagement with CPED, highlighting opportunities for students to present research, connect with peers and faculty across institutions, and access resources that support their academic and professional growth. Faculty will also learn how to leverage CPED to foster collaboration, contribute to the broader EdD community, and enrich their own scholarly and mentoring practices.

Presenters:

Star Brown

Dr. Star Brown has more than 25 years of experience in the community college system as an instructor, administrator, student advisor, and faculty mentor. She is a four-time alumna of Appalachian State University, including graduation from the doctoral program in educational leadership. Dr. Brown holds graduate affiliate faculty status and currently serves on dissertation committees and teaches courses on educational research. Her varied research interests include critical theories, first-generation college students, the community college context, and regional institutional accreditation. Dr. Brown currently serves as the doctoral program’s inaugural Dissertation Coach. Her work with the doctoral program focuses on supporting students in the dissertation phase of the program including guidance for academic writing, dissertation development, and sustaining progress through the completion of the dissertation journey.

Andrew Lail

Dr. Lail (he/him/his) has worked in the field of Student Affairs for over 10 years, starting his career in Housing and Residence Life at the University of Louisville. He completed his Ph.D in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership at the University of Northern Colorado before making his journey to Appalachian State. During his time here at App State, Dr. Lail has worked in the Dean of Students Office as well as the Office of Access and Equity: Disability Resources. Dr. Lail specializes in student development and holistic support as he believes in the power of education and the impact it can have on the individual and society as a whole. His role as the Doctoral Advisor will bring this level of support to the students of this program.

Elizabeth Hayes

Elizabeth (she/her/hers) is a higher education professional with over five years of experience in project management, event coordination, and process improvement. At Appalachian State University, she supports the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership by helping build people-first systems that foster collaboration, clarity, and sustainable practices.

Elizabeth enjoys connecting with others, encouraging creativity, and finding ways to simplify complex processes so faculty, staff, and students can focus on what matters most. She believes in balancing meaningful work with meaningful rest, and she values lifelong learning and growth.
