Many EdD students—and even their faculty advisors—struggle with quantitative research. The root of the problem? Our field still relies heavily on outdated methods like null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). These approaches often confuse rather than clarify, and they can discourage meaningful, practice-based inquiry.

Jiangang Xia

Dr. Jiangang Xia is Associate Professor of Educational Administration at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he teaches graduate courses in leadership theory and applied quantitative research methods. His scholarship investigates how leadership is distributed across school systems and how those patterns influence teacher practice, student learning, and organizational equity. Methodologically, he applies quantitative methods and champions estimation thinking in educational leadership research, emphasizing effect sizes and confidence intervals as more meaningful alternatives to binary p-values.

Dr. Xia has led recent efforts to advance estimation thinking across the field of educational leadership, including guest-editing a special issue of Educational Administration Quarterly focused on estimation, organizing symposia at UCEA and AERA, and transforming quantitative methods courses in his EdD and PhD programs to center estimation-based reasoning.

His work appears in Educational Administration Quarterly, Educational Management Administration & Leadership, Leadership and Policy in Schools, Journal of Educational Administration, among others. He coordinated UNL’s Ed.D. program in educational administration from 2022 to 2025. Dr. Xia currently serves as Associate Editor for both Educational Administration Quarterly and the International Journal of Educational Management, and regularly reviews for leading journals in the field.
