Name of CPED-Influenced Program: Doctor of Education in Educational Practice
Program Description: 

The UMSL EdD program is a three-year, thematic cohort-based program that is open to those who are eligible for graduate work and who currently work as a practitioner in the thematic area.  Themes rotate from year to year.  The program is suited to practitioners who wish to lead schools, institutions, organizations, and agencies to address problems of practice using research literature, practice, and inquiry tools.  The program culminates in a coordinated dissertation of practice designed by cohort members with individual contributions by doctoral candidates.

Description of each year of the Program: 

Students meet with their learning community (thematic cohort) throughout the three-year program.  In the first four semesters students also take one of four two-credit core courses.  Students typically take one one-credit inquiry or tool course per semester.  Course work takes about two years and the third year of the program is devoted to the dissertation in practice.

Program Milestones: 

Doctoral students in the EdD take the Qualifying Examination at the end of the first year in the program.

They take the Comprehensive Examination at the end of the second year in the program.

Upon completion of the Comprehensive Examination and course work, students advance to Doctoral Candidacy.

The culmination of the program includes written work, an oral presentation of dissertation work to the related practice community, and an oral defense of the dissertation in practice.

Students must be eligible for graduate study and have experience in practice.

Admissions Cycle: We have one admissions window every year.  Applications are due April 1st and study commences in the fall semester.

The unique attribute of our program is opportunity to study in community, as practitioners practice in community.  The community is anchored in a specific area of practice and students work together, including choices of which inquiry and tool courses to take, throughout the program.

Is there a set of core courses? What do they consist of?: We have four core courses:  The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; Evaluation of Educational Programs; Leading Socially Just Institutions; and Ethics and Legal Issues.
What is the research sequence? What skills are meant to be developed with these?: 

Our learning communities take a short Designing Research course that is followed by a course in Program Evaluation.  Learning communities then select from a list of research tool courses based on their thematic area of study and the anticipated Dissertation in Practice project.
