Program Description: 

San Francisco State University program Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Educational Leadership prepares educational leaders for P-12 schools and community colleges who will transform their organizations to enhance learning and achievement for all students.

The SF State program is distinguished by:

  • Student learning within a cohort community where students attend class and work on projects together every other weekend during the regular academic year
  • A focus on equity, access, and social justice for diverse learners
  • Courses on transformational leadership and change agent skills, planning and budgeting, ethical behavior in organizations, politics of education, communication skills, and learning strategies for English language learners, children, youth and adults
  • The integration of theory and practice, quantitative and qualitative analyses, and review of promising practices to inform evidence-based decision-making
  • A distinguished multi-disciplinary faculty and perspectives from seven colleges within the university an accelerated timeline (3 years) to complete coursework and dissertation.
Stage in Redesign Process: Design & Development

The EdD dissertation will be an applied, empirical study using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methodology designed to contribute knowledge about better approaches to dealing with a significant issue of practice and/or policy. Ideally, the study will have implications for reducing the learning gap and/or increasing equity. It will have a literature review of publishable quality that focuses on primary source research and provides some social context for the issue, and a research design appropriate for the issue being studied. It is expected students will collect and analyze data appropriate for making a recommendation that will advance knowledge, policy and/or practice. Students will either generate original data, and/or conduct original analyses of existing data sets.

Program Milestones: 

Milestone 1: Qualifying Examination to Advance to Second Year (Year 1)

Milestone 2: Advancement to Candidacy Examination (Year 2)

Admission Requirements: 

Earned baccalaureate degree and master's degree from accredited institutions of higher education with a cumulative grade point average in graduate study of 3.0 or above;

  • Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the three sections of the General Test; GRE scores from the previous five (5) years are acceptable as valid for this purpose;
  • Demonstrated competence in writing as determined by the Ed.D. Program and Graduate Studies at SFSU; applicants must score a 4.0 or above on the analytical writing portion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE); conditional admission may be offered to applicants with lower GRE writing scores.
  • Non-native speakers of English must have a minimum score of 590 on the written, 243 on computer-based or internet-based test, 96 on the computer TOEFL or 7.0 on the IELTS;
  • Demonstrated educational leadership potential and skills including successful experience in school, postsecondary, community, and/or policy leadership;
  • Demonstrated academic excellence, problem-solving ability, technology proficiency, and interest in critically assessing and bringing about improvements to current educational policies and practices
  • Professional resume, including whether the applicant has proficiency in a second language although a second language is not required;
  • Three letters of recommendation attesting to the leadership and scholarship potential of the candidate;
  • Written personal statement reflecting an understanding of the challenges facing the public schools or community colleges/institutions of higher education in California;
  • Submission of a statement of time commitment to complete the EdD Program within three years;
  • Statement of support for the candidate's doctoral studies from his/her employer or, in cases where this is not provided, an indication of the candidate's plan for meeting the demands of the program and his/her professional responsibilities.
