Program Description

Program is intended to enhance the leadership knowledge and skills of organizational leaders in PK-20 settings in the state of Missouri. The Program has been in operation 13 years, is geared toward organizational leaders in PK-12 and Postsecondary settings, and is a cohort based program. Residency is achieved by applied knowledge learned to leadership practice.

Philosophy and Mission

  • It is cooperative: The Program is delivered by five Missouri partner institutions of higher education: Missouri State University, Northwest Missouri State University, Southeast Missouri State University, the University of Central Missouri, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
  • It is interdisciplinary: The Program serves educational leaders in various settings in PK-12, higher education, and business and industry.
  • It is practice-based: The Program is designed to serve the learning needs of practicing professionals, drawing on and contributing to their practice-based knowledge and experience.
  • It is inquiry based and fosters the development of reflective and inquiring educational leaders.
  • It is based upon modern and current conceptions of the professions and their education and the professional development of their members.
  • It is based upon adult learning theories, especially those that focus on the role of prior learning, cooperative and active learning, and transformative learning and instructional practices.

Admissions Requirements

  • Three recommendations, two from faculty who have taught or advised applicant

  • Minimum requirements:
    • GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) in the last 60 hrs of undergraduate education
    • GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale) in Graduate School (Master's Degree)
    • A competitive Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score
    • Evidence of consistency between candidate’s and the program's goals
    • Relevant organizational or educational leadership experience

Application deadline – December of even-numbered years. Paper screening of applications in February; Interviews. Writing Exercise, and Problem-Solving activities required of applicants making cut in a required on-campus interview day.

Signature Pedagogy

Reflective, inquiring, situated, and case based pedagogy that incorporates simulated and authentic leadership experiences into the curriculum and student learning.

Laboratories of Practice

Embedded throughout the program through students’ application of what they have learned in their own leadership practice.

Inquiry Courses

Listed in course listing above as italics. One-two credit inquiry courses address specific research topics – e.g., problem setting, survey methods, research ethics, focus group interviewing, keeping field notes, capstone prospectus development. Goals are to prepare students to be inquiring leaders who base decisions and reform efforts on data and applied research.

Capstone

Applied research conducted locally to improve practice, support organizational change, and/or influence policy decisions.

May take several forms – i.e., program evaluations, policy analyses, research that address problems of practice, including action research projects.

Cost Structure

Tuition and fees established by the University’s Board of Curators. As of June 2010 resident graduate tuition is $306.80 per credit hour. Other fees (e.g., technology) are applicable as well.
