Who:

We ask each CPED institution to send teams of two people—one faculty/administration and one graduate student. It is preferable that the team members who have participated in Convenings thus far return, but we understand if this is not possible.

To register and reserve your hotel for the convening:

  1. Register on the CPED site.
  2. Reserve your hotel: Complete the attached Credit Card Authorization Form and fax to 713-743-9862. NOTE: Reserve your hotel no later than September 14, 2010.

CPED Hotel Room Rate: $118.00 per night plus registration. To book your room with the CPED rate, complete the Credit Card Authorization Form. Indicate the number of nights you wish to stay, include your signature and credit card information, and fax to Jessica at 713-743-9862.

If you do not want to fax your credit card number, you can call Jessica at 713-743-2927 and she will assist you.

After September 14, 2010, members will need to book their own accommodations directly with the Hilton Hotel by calling 1-866-327-1161. The room rates after Sept. 14 will be about $50.00 more per night over the preferred rates. In addition, you must also complete the attached Credit Card Authorization Form to pay for your registration and included meals:

  • One night stay: $147.00 (includes meals and registration)
  • Two night stay: $174.00 (includes meals and registration)

If you are sharing a room and the room charge is on another person’s card, then you must pay for your own registration and meals with your card:

All requests must be completed and faxed by September 27, 2010.

Pre-Work

1. Scholarly-Practitioner Writing:

Bring samples of Scholarly-Practitioner writing—capstone projects, fieldwork, research papers, policy reports, etc. Bring two examples of what your institution considers to be quality scholarly-practitioner writing. This should include sample writing from students as well as rubrics or criteria for assessing the student work. During the convening, we will be taking a closer look at our expectations and developing some guidelines for assessing Ed.D. candidate writing. Please make 5 copies and send one electronic copy to Jill (jillaperry@cpedinitiative.org) by Oct 1.

2. Operationalizing the Principles:

How has your institution operationalized the six Principles for Professional Practice Doctorates (like preparing socially just leaders, providing field-based opportunities, developing a professional knowledge base, etc—see website for list of principles)? Create a one-slide powerpoint (as though you were making a poster) that demonstrates 1-2 of the principles and how your program is operationalizing them and send an electronic copy to Jill (jillaperry@cpedinitiative.org) by Oct 1 for photo copying.

3. Phase II Research Agenda:

In the FIPSE proposal, CPED has asked for funding to promote the development, replication, and adoption of a proven framework for institutional and programmatic restructuring around Education Doctorate programs. The research agenda for phase II will examine change at the individual level (faculty and students); at the programmatic level; and at the consortium level, and will lead to the dissemination of innovative models for professional practice doctorate degree programs in education.

The primary objectives outlined in the proposal include:

  1. Document and evaluate change in the organizational structures of a set of graduate schools to accommodate new professional practice degrees (Ed.D.) for school and college leaders.
  2. Document and evaluate change in the signature learning processes, learning environments, and patterns of engagement of faculty and candidates in Ed.D. programs that participate in CPED.
  3. Document and evaluate fidelity to a set of guiding principles developed in Phase I.
  4. Disseminate lessons learned and best practices for the design and implementation of professional practice degrees to a new cohort of graduate schools of education.

And the key research questions that aim to guide this project are:

  1. How has the CPED effort changed the organizational structures—policies, practices, structures— that govern the roles and responsibilities of faculty and candidates in preparation programs leading to the professional doctorate in education?
  2. How has the CPED effort changed the signature learning processes, learning environments, and patterns of engagement of faculty and candidates in Ed.D. programs?
  3. What impacts have these programmatic changes had on the graduate school of education?
  4. How closely are new programs aligned to the core CPED principles for professional practice doctorate programs as established in 2009?
  5. What lessons learned and best practices for Ed.D. programs can be derived from the efforts of the initial CPED institutions?

As we move into this second phase, our goal as a consortium is to organize a research strategy that will allow us to conduct a 25 + multi-site case study. To begin our strategizing, we ask that you bring 2 examples of research tools that your institution has utilized over the last 3 years to collect data around the four objectives and 5 research questions. Please send an electronic copy to Jill (jillaperry@cpedinitiative.org) by Oct 1.
