A. Definitionsexplanation
2nd version
- Wanted to get rid of "potential"
- Wanted to make sure nothing about PhD in definition because about EdD, thought said you could be really good in practice, or add to body of knowledge, but not both
- Research informs practice, and practice informs research
Principles group definition
- Liked the phrase
- PhD on understanding world, and EdD empowers people to change the world - underlines what the EdD is all about
B. Discussion
- Individuals want their original definitions from yesterday, not definition the "definition group" came up with yesterday
- Reference to PhD is inappropriate - relatively universal
- Transformation - can be good or bad, necessary or unnecessary - this issue not yet resolved
- Combine 1 & 2
- Individuals we are preparing not only apply practices, they generate knowledge - not just their role to import knowledge that was generated somewhere else
- Add "application and generation" of appropriate and effective practices
- "application and generation of appropriate and effective knowledge"
- Knowledge base for the field has been argued for 40 years - we need to have something about that or we will lose it entirely
- Different uses of "practice" is confusing
- Stewardship of professional field/stewardship of the profession and its intended knowledge
- Education doctorate
- Professional practices doctorate
- Professional doctorate in education reflects some of CGS language - need to be able to communicate with outside agencies
- Statement by the council is about professional practice doctorates is about all professional doctorates not just education, so we should use "education doctorate"
- Across fields, everyone is referring to "professional doctorate" (JDs, MDs, PsyDs, etc) - so this gives us a connection to language used by CGS in Task Force report
- CGS' task force report lumps all professional doctorates together - their interest is in the PhD; cavalier way of approaching the professional doctorate in education
- Would be good for us to not be parochial and call it an educational doctorate - we will cut ourselves off from the conversation - using professional doctorate ties us in and links us to the other professional doctorate degrees
- Allow us to position ourselves within the university
- If we are going to take the forefront and get federal/foundation funding, we better identify ourselves within the field of education, or else we will dilute ourselves
- The definition we are creating doesn't say anything about the field of education - if you took "education" out of it, we may not be able to separate ourselves as professional educators
- Effective practice to specific educational contexts and for stewardship for the education profession
- Q: walking into to meeting of board of foundation and trying to get funding to support efforts around professional doctorate in education program - would you use this definition?
- If it says the EdD empowers people with knowledge to change the world in addition to everything else - that statement is the sell
- Not happy with taking out transformation - if we don't transform education institutions, policies, and practices, then we'll never have social justice in schools and communities
- The definition should communicate stronger action in terms of fundamentally shifting education - using the tagline about empowerment communicates this more actively
- Change "change" to " transform"
- Who is the subject - one who holds a professional doctorate? Or a professional doctorate program?
- Reads as if it refers to the person not the program
- Can we say that we've reclaimed the education doctorate with this statement?
- Keep "change" , put "transformation" where it originally was
- Opportunity to keep communicating and documenting - keep working on this
- Will put it together for Friday morning with principles
