The "Hooding" of EdD students

Deanna.Sands's picture

I am writing to see how various institutions address the traditional hooding of doctoral students.  Do institutions with both EdD programs and PhD programs 'hood' both sets of students similarly or differently?  In institutions with only an EdD program, are students 'hooded' as part of their graduation?

Any ideas would be welcomed!  Deanna

EdD "hooding"

At VCU, we have had only PhD students to date. They are hooded at the main graduation ceremony (occurs in the morning). Our School of Education has always had an afternoon ceremony where students are individually recognized as graduates. Recently, our school decided to recognize PhD students individually again at the SOE ceremony. Each Phd student is called foreward; the name of the dissertation is read. Each dissertation chair "hoods" his/her PhD student. Our thinking is that any difference between hooding procedures between EdD and PhD might send a message that one degree is more valuable than the other, so it is our intent to follow the same procedure with our EdD students. EdD Hooding

At the University of Missouri PhD and EdD students are hooded at the same Graduate School Commencement. The only distinction that is made between the PhD and EdD hooding is the order in which the doctoral graduates are presented individually as they walk across the stage. Currently PhD students are recognized first (although at one time the order was reversed). Those of us who often have both PhD and EdD advisees to hood are placed in a "transitional location" between faculty who are hooding only PhD students and faculty who are hooding only EdD students. EdD Hooding at USC

At USC, there is a dedicated ceremony for the School od Education just for doctoral students, held the day before the University's large graduation. At the dedicated ceremony, students are hooded by their advisor, and various awards are presented such as dissertation of the year. By far, the largest number of doctoral students to attend this ceremony are EdD students, because of the imbalance in the numbers of EdD students we admit per year (about 150 per year) compared to the number of PhD students we admit per year (5-10 or so)The following day, there is the large University graduation which many students also attend. In addition to these two ceremonies, the University holds a separate PhD hooding ceremony the day before graduation, but it is confined to PhD candidates.
